It only takes a few warm Florida days, a broken pump, or a long vacation for a pool to go from clear to green. Once algae blooms, the water turns cloudy, then murky, then swamp-green, and you can't even see the bottom step. Many homeowners assume the only option left is to drain the pool and start over.
It usually isn't. Draining a pool in Florida can actually damage it, because high groundwater can push an empty shell out of the ground. Even the worst green pools can almost always be recovered in place, but it takes the right chemicals in the right order, proper filtration, and patience, not just dumping in chlorine and hoping for the best.

We start by testing the water and inspecting your equipment, then shock the pool with the correct dose of chemicals to kill the algae bloom. From there we run heavy, continuous filtration, brush every surface, and vacuum the dead algae and debris off the floor.
As the water clears we add clarifiers or flocculants to pull the finest particles out of suspension, then re-balance the chemistry so the water is safe and comfortable to swim in. Because we work the pool in stages, you can actually watch it change from green to cloudy to crystal clear over the course of the recovery.
Why Recovery Takes a Few Days
A green pool isn't like a routine cleaning where we skim, brush, and vacuum and you're swimming the same afternoon. The green color is billions of living algae cells suspended throughout the water, and they're far too fine to simply net or vacuum out. We have to kill the bloom with the right chemicals first, and then your pump and filter have to physically pull all that dead algae out of the water, a process that runs continuously over several days.
Because of that, most pools go from green to clear within two to five days, depending on how severe the bloom is, the type of algae, and the condition of your filter and pump. A lightly green pool can turn around quickly, while a true black-bottom swamp takes longer and may need a filter deep-clean along the way. Our climate is the perfect storm for algae, since long hot summers, high humidity, frequent afternoon rain, and heavy oak and pollen debris all feed it.
Storm season makes it worse, because power outages stop pumps and runoff dumps organic material into the water after a tropical system rolls through St. Augustine.
